Jamming Tips

Dusty’s Tips for Better Jamming,

  • Keep Your Guitar in Tune at all times. Use an electronic IMG_0114A tuner set at A/440. If you don’t have one borrow one from the other players.
  • Maintain Eye Contact, especially at the beginning and end of songs, and at the entry and exit points of your solos. Follow whoever is leading the song. Make a point of active listening.
  • Dynamics - play louder when you are soloing, softer when you are playing rhythm. Change volume and intensity from verse to chorus to bridge. Experiment with different amp and guitar settings in different sections of the song.
  • Rhythm Guitar - When someone else is singing or soloing, our job is to pull back and make that person sound great. Play More Minimally. When there are lots of guitars, the music can easily sound muddy. Try to find a niche where a little lick or chunky rhythm pattern works with what others are doing, stick to it and develop it.
  • Lead Guitar - when its your turn to sing or solo, crank up, stand out and have fun, Experiment and don’t worry too much about mistakes. We’ve got your back.
  • When in Doubt, Chill Out And Listen. Then try a few of the more obvious chords a or root notes, and expand slowly from there. You’ll soon find your bearings
  • Have Fun!
